The digital marketing landscape changes quickly. New platform updates, AI developments, privacy regulations, and shifts in consumer behaviour can influence how marketers work with clients every day.

For digital marketers at the beginning of their careers, staying informed is only one part of the challenge. Understanding what a development actually means for clients, and being able to form a thoughtful point of view, is where industry knowledge becomes commercially valuable.

That was the focus of the fourth session of our Commercial Impact Workshop, moderated by Amy Tran, our Senior Director of Growth.

Designed for our junior digital marketers, the session created a roundtable environment where our team could bring industry news to the table, challenge different perspectives, and explore how developments could translate into real client conversations.

“The workshop was a great opportunity to step back and think about how emerging topics like data privacy and AI are impacting us as marketers. Amy did a great job pushing us beyond simply discussing these topics and challenging us to think through how we would navigate them with our clients in real-world situations. I also really valued hearing different perspectives from the other participants, which often challenged me to reconsider my own thinking. Overall, the workshop gave me a broader perspective on these issues and helped me think more intentionally about how to translate them into meaningful conversations and applications in our client work.”

Developing Industry Awareness Through Paid Media News

Ahead of the session, our junior digital marketers were asked to prepare a piece of industry news they believed was relevant to digital marketing.

During the roundtable, each marketer had around five minutes to introduce their topic before the discussion opened up to the wider group. Everyone had the opportunity to add their perspective, question assumptions, and consider whether the development represented a challenge, an opportunity, something to monitor, or something that may not require immediate action.

The topics covered a range of developments affecting performance marketing, including changes to bidding strategies, AI-driven shopping experiences, the growing role of AI in advertising, and developments around privacy and first-party data.

Connecting Digital Marketing Trends to Client Impact

A key part of the discussion was moving beyond the news itself.

For each topic, Amy encouraged our digital marketers to consider what the development could actually mean for the brands and clients we work with.

When discussing AI, for example, the conversation moved from AI adoption to the more complex question of consumer sentiment. The group explored the contrast between negative perceptions of AI-generated content and the growing role of AI within search, algorithms, personalisation, and shopping experiences. The discussion also explored how marketers can approach clients who may be hesitant about AI. Rather than assuming every client should immediately adopt a new technology, the group considered how smaller, controlled tests could help establish whether an approach works for a particular brand and audience.

This encouraged our junior digital marketers to think about industry developments through a commercial lens: What does this mean for the client? What should they do about it? And how can we make a recommendation that reflects their specific circumstances?

“I learned more about how to communicate with clients who are hesitant about implementing AI. I also gained a deeper understanding of how AI is currently being used in marketing, as well as the new updates being rolled out across various platforms. The workshops are helpful because they allow me to expand my knowledge of the industry beyond our current work.”

Exploring Data Privacy and the Role of First-Party Data

Another discussion focused on the changing privacy landscape and what it means for digital advertising.

Our digital marketers explored how changes to third-party cookies and privacy regulation could affect targeting and measurement, while also considering the growing importance of first-party data. The conversation connected these industry developments to practical questions around audience targeting, customer data, and how brands can continue reaching relevant audiences as the advertising ecosystem evolves.

The discussion also brought the topic closer to our day-to-day client work, with the team considering how first-party customer data could be used to build more relevant audiences and support stronger targeting.

Learning Through Different Perspectives in a Digital Marketing Team

One of the most valuable parts of the roundtable was hearing how different people interpreted the same development.

A piece of news could represent an opportunity for one client, a risk for another, or simply something worth monitoring. The discussion around AI highlighted this particularly well, as the team considered everything from efficiency and automation to consumer sentiment, brand identity, and the appropriate role of testing.

Creating space for these different perspectives helped our junior digital marketers practise defending their thinking while also remaining open to changing their position when new information was introduced.

That is an important part of developing commercial judgement: knowing when to have a point of view, and when to keep exploring the question.

“The Workshop turned industry news into meaningful conversations about what it means for our clients and our own judgment. Amy pushed us beyond surface-level updates, while hearing different perspectives from the team challenged my thinking and gave me new ways to approach client work. It’s a great opportunity to learn from each other and stay prepared for what’s next in the industry.”

Building Commercial Thinking Through Industry Discussions

The session demonstrated that commercial thinking can be developed through everyday industry conversations.

Our digital marketers were encouraged to look at the news they encounter, question its relevance, and consider how it could affect the clients and campaigns they work on. The discussion repeatedly returned to the same principle: understanding the industry gives marketers more context for the decisions they make.

As Amy highlighted towards the end of the session, understanding industry developments and their commercial impact is an important part of the role of a digital marketer.

Developing Future Digital Marketing Talent at Crealytics

At Crealytics, professional development goes beyond learning platforms and campaign management.

Our Commercial Impact Workshops create opportunities for digital marketers at different stages of their careers to step back from their day-to-day work, explore wider industry developments, and build the commercial judgement needed to become stronger client partners. For our junior digital marketers, sessions like this provide a space to practise forming opinions, communicating ideas, listening to different perspectives, and connecting industry developments to real business challenges.

By making learning collaborative and practical, we continue to create an environment where our teams can grow their expertise while learning from one another.
